“Three Memories” – New Release the Four Aces Guitar Quartet”
“Three Memories”, a three part piece for the Four Aces Guitar Quartet was premiered Saturday, October 15th at deSingel in Antwerp and was positively received! This was the official release of the groups’ new album “For Aces”.; a collection of works written specifically for this album by 9 composers, including Nuccio D’Angelo, Clarice Assad, and Patrick Roux!
I began working with the Four Aces in Autumn of 2015 having met Bart Venken (2nd from left) at the Iserlohn International Guitar Symposium. In late January I traveled from my then home of Kybbadhof, from Southern Germany to Belgium with the goal of rehearsing with the Aces. The next week they would record “Three Memories.”
The work “Three Memories” stemmed from an early morning I spent sitting on a rooftop. There was light drizzle, and as I sat there thinking as the world awoke around me – I realized that I was part of it, yet I was also aware of my role of the observer; sitting quietly in my seclusion. I reflected upon much, and later that morning I began working on this piece. Three fragments of memories, breaking and blending into one another; the light pattering of rain at the beginning of the second movement “Murmurs on a Rooftop”, building to a sunburst and laying itself gently back down.
